I am the annoying friend who takes pictures of not just my food, but everyone else’s food too. I look at photos on instagram tagged at new restaurants either before visiting or while I’m looking at the menu (personally, I think it’s genius but I guess I can see where it causes a little delay…), and I can probably almost always remember what I ordered at a restarurant, if not by memory, then definitely by pictures. With that said, one of my favorite things about traveling is being able to try new places to eat, and well, if I didn’t take a picture of it, did I even eat it? Obviously not.
One of my favorite things about New York specifically is definitely the endless options of food. I usually have a game plan of places to try when traveling but for this trip, I got stuck doing real life things and didn’t have time to plan but surprisingly, I didn’t even starve or die.
The first order of business when we checked into our hotel was to find the closest juice bar because obviously I was going to eat healthy all weekend. I realized that Pressed Juicery was just a short walk away, and I realized I had been following them on Instagram for months thinking they were only in California, haha whoops. They have a frozen option that I couldn’t find on the menu so I ended up getting the Greens 2 which was delicious and not even as overpriced as some local Richmond juicebars. Ahem. It also ended up being the last green thing I consumed all weekend.
Dinner on Thursday was at Santina, just under the High Line. I have zero pictures (because it was dark/we were having dinner with people I never met so I had to act civilized and not take my phone out for photos) and even though I needed the entire menu explained to me, it was ALL delicious. I don’t know how to describe any of it but it was good. Not sure if the drinks were $18 good, but hey… when in Rome/NYC.
Before we headed into Brooklyn on Friday, we asked the groom for a good brunch spot nearby and he suggested Bubby’s. I mean thank god he just understands what a “cute restaurant” even means because I immediately fell in love with this place, the food, the coffee in a mason jar, the eclectic frames on the walls, the waiter, all of the things. I think I even left a review on the postcard telling our waiter to quit his job and move to Richmond but there is literally nowhere as cute as Bubby’s here that he could work at and also that was a creep move on my part and I’m sorry. I got the griddle special w/ a blueberry pancake, and honestly I will never understand how this meal is $19 when you can get it for less than $6 at Joe’s Inn here at home, but it was still pretty good. The Stumptown iced coffee was good, but the mason jar made it that much better. I’m such a sucker. They even give you a stick of Irish butter with your meal – I mean who does that?! Step aside, butter packets.
Solo morning adventures
Bubby’s, I just love you
Fast forward past the oh-so-delicious reception food on Friday night. 30 is coming up quick, and waking up on Saturday morning after the wedding hurt me a little more than I’d like to admit. A 15 minute walk (through my new neighborhood, nbd) to brunch at Buttermilk Channel later, and I was back to normal. With a name like that, I felt obligated to order the pancakes and I am so so glad I did and now I am so so sad I can’t have those pancakes every weekend. I think when we move to Brooklyn, we’ll go here once a day until we’ve tried everything on the menu.
that, ladies and gentlemen, is a pork chop + waffle. chicken + waffles are so 2015.
For our last meal, dinner on Saturday, we had a big group meal (after more celebratory drinking) @ Covina and I ordered the bucatini pasta (delicious) and then waddled my way over to Madison Square Park and got Shake Shack for dessert. And by dessert, I mean I ate a second dinner while everyone else waited patiently.
Sunday was a bagel + coffee kind of morning as we made our trek home. Or if we’re being honest, I got a bagel in NY and then another in NJ. Considering I planned zero food stops for this trip, I think we all left with full and happy bellies and going to the gym when we got home sucked.
